RooG and I went back to Tokyu Hands to buy each other's Christmas presents. He wanted a little hand warmer, and I wanted this fancy shmancy Bath Bomb Maker. Check it out!!
All it takes to make a bath bomb, evidently, is 150 grams of baking soda, 50 grams of citric acid, a little bit of water, and whatever else you wanna throw in there. When I came home I made my very first bath bomb using a recipe included with the maker. It's called Sweet Brown Bear, and you just mix cocoa powder into the basic ingredients. My finished bomb turned out ok, a little on the crumbly side though. I'd like to mix some peppermint oil and maybe some cocoa butter in there the next time, in an attempt to copy one of my favorite Lush bath bombs, Haagenbath. Where can I buy cocoa butter...?Current Mood: good Current Music: Pet Shop Boys-- This used to be the future

Just as a lark, I put our pics into some website to see what our kids would look like.... I present, me and RooG's son!

In other news, I've been super busy. On Mondays I have two corporate classes-- one in Shinjuku (at 8 AM ahhhhhhhh) and another in Shin-Kawasaki. And on Tuesdays I have another corporate class in Oppama. Went to karate last night too.
RooG has been cooing at his roaches for the past hour..... but that's nothing new. I'm having fun planning our big upcoming Christmas party by poring over catalogs for Christmas cakes... I think I've got a few good ones picked out, now I just have to wait for the guests to RSVP!Current Mood: mellow Current Music: Eminem-- Rabbit Run

Today I woke up kinda early so I could meet my student M-san for a lesson. M-san was my very first private student and we used to meet nearly every weekend without fail, but recently he found out he was being transferred to Hong Kong. He's happy to go-- he's been asking for an international transfer for a while-- and I think it'll be a really good experience for him. But since he leaves next weekend, today was our last lesson. A little sad. He's awesome.
Then I took the train to Tokyo-- Awajichi to be exact-- to teach a corporate class at a glass manufacturer. The students are three dudes in their 30s or 40s. Their level's a little low but they try hard and see to enjoy the class. Which is good, cos I enjoy teaching it!
I had an hour to kill and an empty tummy, so I hit up Freshness Burger and got a cheeseburger. OM NOM NOM. Delicious!! It had raw onions and lots of em, which was yummy when I was eating it, but I couldn't get the taste of onion out of my mouth the rest of the day. I chewed three pieces of gum and drank lots of fluids, but no change. Oh well. D:
Then I went back to Yokohama to teach another class-- three folks in their 40s and 50s who learn English just a hobby. I've been teaching them twice a month since August. They're a really good group and very kind-- next week they say they'll take me out to dinner! Yippee!
My job involves a lot of time on trains, but I don't mind so much if I've got a good book. And I do-- Lost Japan by Alex Kerr. Super interesting!
Now it's almost 4 AM and I can't sleep. RooG woke me up when he came home from the Kanagawa dojo bounenkai (end of the year party). waaaahhhhCurrent Mood: blah Current Music: Britney Spears-- Amnesia

Yesterday I showed up at the Kanagawa dojo, all set for class. But when I got there, Yasumoto-senpai was just like "Yo Barerii, there's no class today, but you can go work out by yourself if you want!" No class?!
So I got all gi-d up and just did kihon and kata for a little while. Here I am workin hard!

I haven't had a Thanksgiving in five years... not counting that time three years ago when Irene and Steve and I went out to Good Honest Grub for a Canadian Thanksgiving dinner. That doesn't count. ;D I'd pretty much given up on it... until Roxy ( chichiri) invited us to her house on Monday for a good old fashioned Thanksgiving dinner!!
Roxy is a superhero. She brought a suitcase to Costco, loaded it up, brought it back to her house, and prepared us an amazing Thanksgiving feast with ALL the trimmings! She made turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, carrots, mashed potatoes n gravy, AND she bought a sweet potato pie for dessert!! The food was AMAZING and I enjoyed hanging out with her and her friends too.
Here's the lady herself with the FOOD!!

Other than that, nothing to report. Just doing my thang. I finally saw the movie Okuribito (English title is Departures), which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film last year. It was really interesting to see the Japanese funeral customs, and it was a good, well-made movie too, but there was one character in particular that just really got on my nerves. D: Other than that, it was really good. It was cool to hear the crazy Yamagata dialect too. Yokohama doesn't have a dialect (with the possible exception of "be", a manly way of saying "deshou"), but I digress........
Also, Annie posted this pic of us at the Lebanese resturant we hit up in Kannai last month. The food was amazing (hummus!! falafel!! baklava!!), but the highlight was the mizutabako!! I am VERY VERY anti-smoking, but I will happily make an exception for the occassional hookah, shared with good friends. As you can see, the hookah's strange powers made me feel very... happy.

Richard posted these two pics to his Facebook and they made me LOL so I'll stick em here too. Here I am attempting to get a decent shot of Laura, Tan, Amy, and Annie...

...but then look at RooG's face in this shot!! Richard captioned the pic "It's tough being the birthday boy!". RooG claims that Richard told him to pose that way. But neither of us remember too well, cos we were pretty toasty at that point.

In other news, yesterday I went to 11 AM class at the dojo... and I was the only one who showed up! So I had a private lesson with Sensei and we spent the whole hour doing kata and idou for my next test, in February. It was really fun and Sensei was like "I'm so glad you came! I would have been so lonely." I'm glad I came too!
It's so COLD recently. :( Last night I made curry nabe and it was yummy! Are there any flavors of nabe that aren't?!
Yesterday I checked out the Foreigners' Cemetery in Ishikawacho, just on a lark. I checked the website beforehand and it said it was open from 10-5, but when I got there was a sign in Japanese saying you couldn't enter. However, the only thing keeping me from the cemetery that I had hiked up a huge hill to get to, was one little chain barrier thing. So I unhooked the chain and, uh, let myself in.
Paranoia kept me from staying long (maybe 20 minutes or so), but what I did see was really nice and interesting. I like graveyards, not necessarily because I'm a closeted semi-goth and I like morbid deathy stuff, but also because of the history, and the gardens, and the atmosphere. Plus this cemetery offers some slammy views of Yokohama!

It turns out I misread the website-- the dinky little "museum" (actually one room with pictures, albeit interesting ones) is open from 10-5, but the actual cemetery is only open on weekends from 12-4. I'll go back one of these days.Current Mood: good Current Music: Depeche Mode-- A Question of Time

RooG's cold hasn't improved and he's still miserable, so he took today off work and he's sleeping right now. I feel almost totally back to normal-- just some coughing, and also my head hurts and my nose starts running like crazy when I go outside for some reason. >_> But otherwise I'm ok.
I finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Housseini. Couldn't put it down!!! Polished it off in three days. It was so good.
I have some leftover pics of the tournament. This is me about an hour after losing my second fight, when finally my appetite came flooding back and I was ready to eat the yummy bento they provided for the fighters! CHOW TIME! Also, if only the rest of my body was as ripped as my forearms are. ;_;

I woke up this morning feeling a lot better. Well, I still feel bad, but now it just feels like a regular cold. My fever's gone down two whole degrees. Yesterday I could do absolutely nothing. Even sitting up was rough. So I laid around all day long and watched the movies I'd rented (Kinky Boots and The Bucket List, both good!). They gave me Tamiflu and a fever reducer medicine. I've only taken the Tamiflu twice so far, but already it's made a big difference.
RooG came home announcing that he wasn't feeling so good. And sure enough, as of today he had a slight fever and a lot of same symptoms as me, so right now he's at the hospital waiting to get a Q-tip jammed up his nose. >_>
The nurse said that you usually develop flu symptoms two days after being exposed to it. I started feeling sick on Sunday, but on Friday, one of my students showed up to class. I asked him what was wrong, and he said his wife and son were at home with the swine flu. So I wonder if I got it from him? But really, there's no telling where I got it from. I wash my hands often, but all it takes is one contaminated train handle or door knob or...
In other news, I'm happy it's gotten colder because of the FOOD!! Winter means hot tea-- I've busted out the Celestial Seasonings holiday teas again! It also means wakame soup, nabe, and oden. I think I'll make nabe for dinner tonight. Mmmmm. Nabe.Current Mood: relaxed Current Music: Fall Out Boy-- She's My Winona

I went to the hospital. The whole ordeal took a little more than two hours, which kinda sucks considering that very little of that time was spent actually speaking to a doctor or nurse. But the hospital's only 10 minutes' walk from my house, so I guess you can't complain.
They took my temperature and I had a temp of 37.4. 36 is normal body temperature here, so I had a bit of a fever. He listened to my chest with the stethoscope and asked some questions and then he said he'd give me a flu test. The flu test was a really long, thin Q-tip. He held my shoulder and said "This is gonna hurt" and plunged it in and dug around for what felt like forever. it REALLY REALLY hurt and big fat tears came spilling out of my eye. Even now my poor nostril feels violated. He gave me a paper mask to wear and sent me back to the waiting room.
Later a nurse came and grabbed me. "You've got influenza," she said and led me to this empty, tiny room and closed the door behind me. She wanted to know where I worked and whether I knew anyone that had it. I really don't have any idea where I may have gotten it from, and that seemed to worry her.
A while after the doctor came to the room and said I have influenze and I'll give you medicine. He said he didn't know whether it was swine flu or just regular flu, but as long as I take the medicine I'll be fine. I paid the money and recieved the medicine right there in the little room, cos they didn't want me walking around and contaminating others. They said to go right home and not leave for at least 2 days.
So here I am. Today is RooG's birthday (he's 30!!!!!), but he said he'd come straight home after work to look after me. :) Canceled all my classes for today and tomorrow. I have to eat lunch so I can take my first Tamiflu.

I am officially sick. Fever, body aches, occassional chills, you name it. I hated to do it but I called last night to cancel my 8 AM class this morning, and the way things are going I may have to cancel the 5:45 one too. D: The swine flu is going around so I'm going to go to the hospital later to get checked out, just to be sure.
It's 3 AM... I went to bed at 11 but woke up at 1:30, miserable. :/ So I'm sitting here rewatching Sicko, the Michael Moore documentary on American healthcare, which I rented on a whim the other day.
Allz I can say is, I'm glad I live in Japan. ;_; When I'm sick like I am now, I can just go to the hospital, any one I like, and I have to pay just a little of the total cost. But now I'm seriously wondering if RooG and I should buy insurance for our trip to the US in December. We'll be there only nine days, but if God forbid we were to befall some horrible illness or accident while there, there's no way we'd be able to afford the hospital bills. On Monday I started My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, and I finished it yesterday on the Oppama train platform. I couldn't put it down. I ended up kinda skimming the ending cos I couldn't wait to find out how it ended, but I went back and reread parts I skimmed properly on the train home last night. It made me cry. :( AWESOME book.
Today I started reading Atonement by Ian McEwan. This book's won a torn of awards and praise.... but it was a struggle to get through 40 pages. Just the way it was written really turned me off. I just read the full plot summary on Wikipedia, and I'm really glad I didn't force myself to read it through to the end. D: Bleah.
Sensei saw my first fight and he said I need to work on moving my legs more. "You move fine in practice, but you need to move better in tournaments." He didn't offer any advice, of course. I am vexed.

We took the train to Oyama city in Tochigi prefecture on Monday and arrived at around 12:30 PM. It was really easy, because it turns out Oyama and HT are on the same train line! And it takes two hours exactly.
Only problem is, there's NOTHING worth doing in Oyama, as we soon found out. I am not even joking. Tochigi prefecture is supposedly famous for gyouza, but we found only ONE ramen shop in the entire town, and we walked everywhere!! The gyouza was pretty good, but not worth going all the way to Oyama for. D:
The highlight of Oyama is the E Hotel, where we stayed. The room is nice, new, and clean, there's a yummy and free breakfast buffet, and a really nice Japanese-style public bath too. Despite my nerves, I managed to get a full night's sleep and was even able to eat some breakfast! These are Good Things.
My fight was #11, which is AWESOME because usually they do the womens' fights last, so I have to wait around all day long for my chance to fight. Boo. My first fight was #11, my second was #42, but RooG's first fight was #67, so he didn't go on till like 1 or 2 PM. He wasn't nervous at all though. How does he do it?!
Here's the video of RooG's fight. Heed my words and TURN DOWN THE VOLUME, because my yelling is really loud and annoying. I'll say it again: One's cheering squad is vitally important in tournaments. They make all the difference! Also, I'm so sorry for the shaky camera. D:
RooG's opponent was taller and had 15 kilos on him, but RooG wore him down by constantly moving around him. Eventually he got tired, which works in RooG's favor because he has infinite stamina, and RooG won in the second round. The camera's batteries cut out before the end, though. :/
RooG's next opponent was a guy from our dojo that we train with every Thursday. D: RooG fought hard but the other guy was just stronger, I think. ;_; Oh well. We'll keep trying!
My arm and chest are covered in deep purple bruises. RooG doesn't have a scratch on him. (HOW DOES HE DO THAT?!)

Today was the tournament. I won the first fight (yay!!) and lost the second (booo). The girl that I lost to at Zen Kanto in April ended up winning the whole thing, again. She's amazing. I didn't go up against her again this time, but I probably will in the future, maybe even at Zen Kanto next year. ;_; So I gots ta keep training.
I brought my Flip Video camera with two spare batteries. RooG took video of my first fight, but during my second fight the batteries died. So no video of my second fight. Then I took video of RooG's first fight, but I only got about 3/4ths of it because the spare pair died. D: They were brand new batteries. D:
So here's my first fight.
I know, I'm not the flashiest fighter. But it got the job done (that time, at least). My awesome high side kick right of the bat had her on the ground, which made me happy. I wish I'd kicked more and mixed up my punches a bit.
BUT something cool happened this time around. Every time I've been in a tournament, there's this voice that pops up in my head. It tells me to give up. And I've listened to it, and regretted it like crazy afterwards, of course. But actually being on the mat and fighting is a really weird thing. You have to experience it yourself; no amount of words can adequately describe it.
Anyway. Today that voice was there too, but it was drowned out by another voice! This voice was saying, This is fun! I like doing this! I want to be here! Everyone's watching me. This is my chance to shine! You can see my maniacal smile in the video if you look close. I was HAPPY to fight!!
My second opponent was a brown belt-- faster, stronger, and more experienced than me. But today was a good day! I bet I can do even better next time!
RooG also won his first fight and lost his second. But he did an awesome job too. :D
thank GOD it's over so I can finally stop worrying about it!!! I have my life back again!!!! =D =D

This Is It was..... AMAZING!!!!!! Wow!! Wow!! Wow!!! I wanna see it again!!!
It rocked me, but it really bummed me out, too. :( We took Michael for granted for so long. He was SO talented. Not only him, but every single person involved in that show (and there were quite a few) really gave it their all. Such a tragedy. But I'm really glad that this movie was able to happen. What an amazing show it would have been.
In other news, the weather's gotten cold enough for RooG to rock his crazy parachute pants:

We went to kata class at the dojo today. It was pretty good.
The karate tournament is the day after tomorrow. I'm trying not to be nervous, but it's not really working. Oh well. :-/ We'll go to Oyama tomorrow, hang out and stay the night in a hotel, and then do the tournament on Tuesday and go home right afterwards. Ganbarimasssssu!

I had two lessons today and they were both really fun! It's awesome that interesting people pay me to have interesting conversations with them. No complaints. Then I went to karate and had a good time just practicing kata. Did some mitt, too.
I had time to kill before Lesson #2, so I ate lunch at Bubby's (om nom!) and then went to H&M in the hopes of finding a denim skirt. I didn't think I'd actually find one, especially since most clothing stores in Japan don't carry my moo-cow size. but lo and behold I DID find an appropriate skirt, and at a decent price too!! (3300 yen). Too bad I had to wait 15 minutes to try it on, and another 15 minutes in line for the register. Oh well.
After that I hit up my local Lush and scored some seasonal goodies-- Snow Fairy solid perfume and Snowcake soap. YESSSSSSSSS. RooG loves my Snow Fairy. I love it too!
Right now we're watching the movie Silk. The supporting actors (like Miki Nakatani, Alfred Molina, and sexy sexy Koji Yakusho) do a bang-up job, but the film is doomed from the start because it casts no-talent Michael Pitt in the lead role. Barf!! The plonking piano score by Ryuichi Sakamoto leaves something to be desired too. I'd still recommend it though, cos it's gorgeous to look at.
I am SUPER STOKED because we have tickets to see This Is It tomorrow!!!! I bought the tickets yesterday and already the only seats left were in the second row. D: But at least it's dead center, in the second row. Still, I'm really excited to see it!
oh, and when we came home, we saw that one of the roaches had babies!! This brings our roach count up to 80+. D: D: D: Also, one of the hermit crabs molted and now he's a beautiful baby pink. So cute!

I have this friend on Facebook... we were in the drama club together in high school but we haven't actually spoken to each other since then. Anyway, he has this music career that he's trying to get off the ground. Good for him. But today came the SIXTH request for me to becomes his fan on Facebook.
Look, I wish the guy the best. But I'm not gonna be his fan just because we were both in Pirates of Penzance, you know? Would unfriending him make the requests stop? Should I politely tell him to cut it out? Or just keep seething in silence as I delete the requests as they come? --
I really really wanna see This Is It, but it's only playing for two weeks?! How lame is that?! I thought Michael was in hella debt, right? This would have been such a good chance to make a ton of cash. :/ --
On Tuesday I went to the Yokosuka dojo again. Class was hard but awesome. Every dojo has its own culture and Yokosuka is no different-- when people have advice for me when we're sparring or doing partner work, they just come out and say it. It's super helpful. I think this weekly dose of Yokosuka is gonna end up being really good for me.
After class, Mogi-shihandai disappeared with his cell phone into the back room. Then he came out and was like "Hey Barerii, I'm gonna drive you home tonight, ok? I already got RooG's permission!" Aww. :) We live kinda close to each other so I guess it's not such a big deal for him, but it still took about an hour to get home. It didn't feel that long though, cos he loves 80s American music like Bon Jovi and Mr. Mister, so we were blasting that in the car and having fun. :D

I've been busy busy! I started a new teaching gig with AEON at Sumitomo Heavy Industries in Oppama. Teaching Voyage and then Discovery in one and a half hour classes, one right after the other. It was really nice to teach AEON lessons for the first time in three years-- what can I say, I love them! They're fun to teach and I think the students enjoy them too.
Class ends at 7:15, which is just perfect, because the Yokosuka dojo is just a few stops away on the same train line, near Horinouchi station. I'd never been to the Yokosuka dojo before, but RooG used to teach there, so he met me at Horinouchi and we went together for the 8:30 class.
The instructor at Yokosuka is Mogi-shihandai, who I love love love! He's so nice and a great teacher too. Including me and RooG, there were ten students there.... 3 black belt dudes, 6 brown belt dudes, and me. D: Class was good, we just did kihon (at Yokosuka they do 10 reps each instead the usual 20) and then sparred 10 x 2 min. Rough. But it was good practice. I'll be showing up to the Tuesday class every week now, after my Oppama class. :)

Well, sure enough, as soon as I came home from my lesson tonight one of the first things RooG said was, "You tipped over the baby roaches' cage, didn't you?" He said he knew immediately because the layout was all wrong. Whoops.
I just took this picture of RooG eating his dinner.... with the three roach cages arranged in front of him. Yes. It's like this every day.

And this is the baby roach cage that I tipped over, after RooG fixed it all up again and meticulously put little apple peel slices in the shelter. Those black blobs that look like shadows inside the shelter are the roaches. They're still tiny!

I know it sounds crazy that I don't mind having all these roaches in the house, but honestly, Madagascar hissing cockroaches are great pets!! They're clean. They don't make loud noises. They don't smell. They're really easy to take care of, and they're actually really cute once you get used to them! You can pick them up and hold them and all the little things they do are just so cute. Really!!

RooG takes obsessively good care of his roaches. It's sick. He truly is, completely obsessed with them. Whenever he's away from home, he's either blabbing to me about them or visiting roach blogs and what have you on the internet (on his cell phone). And whenever he's at home, he's with them. Either he'll sit in the roach room (formerly known as the Wii room) with them, or he'll bring them into the living room with me. He's constantly rearranging their cages, adding new food or making new shelters, that kind of thing.
(I make it sound worse than it is, but don't worry, me and RooG's human relationship is still good. We just keep the door open between the roach and living rooms and still talk to each other. Heh. I don't really mind his obsession, cos the roaches make him SO HAPPY for some reason, and I like to see him happy! And I like the roaches too, but not as much as he does!)
Aaaaaaaaanyway. RooG's at work. I went to the roach room to check out the babies. I pulled the cage near me to get a closer look, and to my absolute horror the thing tipped over and spilled out EVERYWHERE. The water dish tipped over too so now the tatami is covered in dirt/ mud and I'm PANICKING because I'm thinking the roaches are gonna go all over the place.
LUCKILY, all of the baby roaches save two were nestled inside their little shelter. The first thing I did was put that shelter in another cage so they couldn't get out. Then I successfully rounded up the two that had gotten free. Tried to put the dirt back in the cage and smooth it out. Washed off the dirt-covered roach jelly and mikan that he'd left for them. Washed off and refilled the water dish. Tried to put it all back the way it was, which was difficult because I don't really remember how it was. Then put the roach-infested shelter back in there and slammed the lid. Vacuuumed up all the loose dirt. Prayed to God that I'd gotten it right!
RooG will come home while I'm at work tonight, so hopefully he won't notice. I'm not gonna tell him unless he asks. D:

I had a good day today! First up was a corporate lesson with Mr. O in Togoshi. Here I am at Gotanda station waiting for the subway!

The map to the place said "7 minutes on foot from Togoshi station." Uh, yeah. It took me FORTY minutes to find the stupid place, and I had to ask for directions three times. Good thing I arrived at Togoshi hella early! D: The lesson with Mr. O was a pleasure as always. He's such a sweetheart. I love good students!! <3
After the lesson I decided to take the train from Gotanda instead. I had time to kill and I was feeling hungry mungry, so I was lookin around for a place to eat. And then there it was, right in front of me. Kua 'Aina!!!

Kua 'Aina avocado cheeseburgers are good for neither my wallet nor my diet. but they're SO GOOD. ;_; I don't even eat other hamburgers anymore, because nothing compares. And I haven't had Kua 'Aina in forever, so I splurged. OM NOM NOM
I went to Lush and bought the very last bottle of Sonic Death Monkey shower gel. i LOVE that stuff, but it's just been discontinued. ;_;
Then I met up with RooG and we killed time at Tokyu Hands, where he bought a new bento box. And then we went to fight class at the dojo.
Because the "new influenza", as it's being called here is going around, the teacher had everyone gargle before class. Not wash hands or anything, just gargle. Later, when a kid got a bloody nose and bled all over the floor, the teacher said "Just leave it, we'll clean it up later". The kid continued to bleed on the floor. Finally, after class, we cleaned up the blood with.... a wet rag. No soap or anything. Just a filthy rag and some water. Um.......... yeah. The Japanese just baffle me sometimes. I'll never wrap my head around the way they think!!!
We got home and RooG made dinner. Fried rice. OM NOM NOM. Now I gotta wish the dishes!!

Here's our roach, Fujiwara Norika.

One look at her belly tells us that she too is HELLA pregnant!! D: And no, we still aren't quite sure what we're gonna do with the babies... but since they take like three years to get to full adult size, we still have some time to figure it out.
Here's a letter that made RooG LOL when he opened the mail slot to retrieve it.

And this letter was from one of the companies I work for! I just went to the office yesterday, and they still can't figure out which gender I am?!
In other news, remember my brand new karate uniform? I wore it to class on Friday and it was the most amazing thing. Not only do I look super badass in it (uh, if I may say so myself), but it's so thin, so it's easy to smash into my karate bag. It's light and easy to move in. PLUS, it doesn't soak up sweat and become twice as heavy like the ordinary dogi do!! I'm in love. RooG and I got our names embroidered on it for extra awesomeness.
